Castle Clinton in Spring (click here to bid on this painting)

Castle Clinton in Spring
Oil - 12 x 16"
This was painted in the spring of 2006. It was painted in lower Manhattan (New York, NY) at the most southern tip (the oldest part of the city that was settled by the Dutch) where one can catch the Staten Island ferry. The structure in the painting is also one of the oldest structures in New York, it is "Castle Clinton". I painted this as the sun was going down in the very late afternoon toward evening. It was spring and pink cherry blossom trees were in bloom. The sky had a glow which I was well pleased in capturing by using broken color of pinks, yellows, blue-greens, and blues. The structure massed together in shadow bringing the values close together. And finally the play of light and dark with the bright shafts of light, express the direction of the late afternoon sun.
