Cold Spring Harbor Dawn (click here to bid on this painting)

Cold Spring Harbor Dawn
Oil - 11 x 14"
This was painted weekend before last (September, 2007). It was painted in the village of Cold Spring Harbor, NY on Long Island. I knew as I started this small painting that the morning effect I was observing, the reddish horizon and clouds, wouldn't last very much longer, but I tackled it nonetheless. Consequently, it became a memory painting, meaning, the whole painting had to call upon my memory of the observed effect rather than trusting what I saw as I painted it. Observe how the light strikes the island (perhaps a peninsula, but it appears to be an island) just to the right of center.
