Oil - 12 x 16"
This was painted last fall (almost a year ago now), 2007. Painted in Chester, NY which is upstate, west of Bear Mountain and Cold Spring, NY and just south of the Catskill Mountains. Obviously this is a painting about color. I was excited by the fall color in this scene and wanted to capture it. I believe the painting "works" because there is an area where the colors get most intense in contrast to the majority of the painting which is softer in relation and made up of a variety of colors. This area, the center of focus you could say, is where the tree which is bright yellow with some tinges of pure scarlet red is adjacent to the mountain receeding back in space. The area of "clean" violet creates not only a contrast of dark and light but a contrast of complimentary colors.
