Williamsburg Sunset (click here to bid on this painting)

Williamsburg Sunset
Oil - 5 7/8 x 8 15/16"
I've lived in Williamsburg (section of Brooklyn, NY) since 1989 and been painting the neighborhood all that time. The neighborhood is going through dramatic changes as new apartment buildings are being developed so that there is no longer a unity of the historic buildings as there has been in the past. I am saddened by these developments, however some of the old neighborhood lives on in my paintings. This was painted in the late 90's, I believe about 1997 or '98. It is a sunset, a small study capturing the moment as the sun goes down and the sky magnificently lights up. The building to the right (a high school I believe) catches the orange glow of the sun on its side plane and the distant buildings across the East River in the distance, which happens to be Manhattan (New York, NY) take on the reddish glow at the horizon.
This was painted at the section where N. 4th Street intersects with Metropolitan Avenue. Nearby Roebling Avenue is now home to a hair salon, art gallery, a chic coffee shop, and some other fancy stores, all of which were not there when this was painted (they don't change the scenery but it's interesting to observe.) And there are tall, modern looking buildings toward the East River on the Brooklyn side now that weren't in the scene when this was painted as well.
