View from Mills Mansion in Fall
Oil - 12 x 16"
This was painted three years ago (2005) on the ground of Mills Mansion which is an estate near Staatsburgh, New York (not far from the Vanderbilt Estate in Hyde Park, NY). The scene is looking out (from the mansion) west toward the Hudson River, which is in view in the painting, the blue peaking out between the trees and where space opens up. The variety and intensity of the fall foliage (oranges, reds, ochers, yellow-greens, etc). is what caught my interest. The contrast of those colors with the blue of the sky, reflected in the Hudson River, along with the violet of the distance mountains, intensifies the color even more so. Pine trees on the left, in the foreground, in shadow give the scene more depth. The intensity of color is carried forward to the foreground (the rich grass and fallen autumn leaves).
