Brooklyn Bridge, Dusk (click here to bid on this painting)

Brooklyn Bridge, Dusk
Oil - 5 7/8 x 8"
Done on the Manhattan side, near South Street Seaport, this was painted about 2 years ago when I began doing small 6x8 oil sketches, also called esquises. I like to do them to capture quick effects of light and to find motifs that might serve for larger paintings. Working small allows you to capture the light effectively, especially when you're dealing with a fleeting effect such as dusk or dawn.
The scene of course is the world renowned, world famous Brooklyn Bridge, the first of the great bridges of New York which also includes the Manhattan Bridge, the Williamsburg Bridge, and others. I especially like this time of day when the dusk has the twilight glow and the city lights just begin to come on. The lamp post serves as a repoussoir pushing the bridge and the buildings of Brooklyn back in space into the distance.
