Oil - 14 x 18"
Painted last week (March 2008). This is a demonstration painting, done alla prima (meaning all at once). It shows market flowers with a red gerbera as the flower of main focus (pink lilies and white daisies are also in the painting).
In this painting I condensed what would normally take a few days into several hours. It is a great opportunity to show one's capabilities to paint in a summarily fashion and one's strengths and potential weaknesses are on display. In other words, it is a real challenge and forces one to call upon all his (or hers) capabilities. I feel I was succesful in showing the red gerbera as the center of focus in the painting.

Cadman Plaza with Figure (sold)

Oil - 12 x 15 1/4"
I've painted at this location several times from several angles over the years and I usually paint here when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and the pink blossoms are in full display. This particular painting was done in the spring of 2006. The location is Cadman Plaza, close to downtown Brooklyn, the bridges, etc. It is a World War II memorial and park. Underneath the towering figure, a person relaxes and is caught up in reading (or studying). Designed by Charles Keck, at 24 feet, these are the largest frieze sculptures in New York City (the statue of liberty is a statue "in the round".)

Pink Tulips in Blue Pitcher (sold)

Oil - 21 x 21"
This was painted in 2004 in my studio in Brooklyn, NY (Williamsburg) under north light, the light of Rembrandt and the old masters.
The painting basically is a study striving for a harmony of pink against blue, with variations into purple and green. The subject matter are bright pink, magenta tulips in a blue / blue-violet ceramic glazed pitcher". A turnip on the ground relates to the pinks and greens of the tulips.

Flower Shopping on Broadway (sold)

Oil - 12 x 16"
This was painted in September of 2007. It is a scene on Broadway Avenue, uptown Manhattan (in the 70's) showing a market, with fruit and flowers outdoors by the sidewalk. The center of focus of the painting is a woman shopping, looking at flowers, near the sunflowers. There are yellow sunflowers in the painting, red roses and other varieties of flowers. To the side is a newstand, typical of New York City.
